Upton Magna, St Lucia - former ring of five bells
5 bells, Tenor reputedly 9-0-0 in A#Ground floorSJ 553124
In fact, the Tenor weighed 8-0-24
Treble: James Barwell of Birmingham, 1907
Second: Undated, (Walters suggests 15th century), cast by IT of Exeter
Third and Fifth: Newcombe of Leicester, 1605
Fourth: Thomas Clibury II of Wellington, 1664
The treble had a Doncaster head and the second was the only other bell to retain its canons. The bells all hung from wooden headstocks on plain bearings in a wooden frame (Pickford 5.1: B1, C2, D3, E4, A5). They were rung from the base of the tower with four of the ropes falling alongside a handsome, if inconveniently placed, monument with the fourth in splendid isolation opposite.
The ring of five was pealed for the first and only time on 15th September 2007. Two days later the bells were removed to the workshops of Hayward Mills Associates in Nottingham.
